Under the golden hues of a breathtaking Philippine sunrise, a powerful conversation unfolded with LKTBF Guru Head Coach John Kessel:

Volleyball isn’t just a game. It’s a lifelong journey of connection, passion, and learning. Few people embody this philosophy better than John Kessel, a coaching legend whose impact has reached players and coaches across 90 nations. His recent visit to the Philippines, in collaboration with Let’s Keep The Ball Flying, was a testament to his enduring mission: to help kids fall in love with volleyball and empower coaches to teach it effectively.

A Trip with Purpose

Why does someone who has spent over 50 years coaching still travel the world to teach volleyball? For Kessel, the answer is simple—because the game has given him so much, and he’s determined to give back.

“This trip was about capturing ideas that help kids love volleyball sooner, love it deeper, and help coaches teach it better,” he shares.

Despite challenging weather, kids played with smiles on their faces, proving that volleyball is a sport for all—brothers, sisters, parents, children, young, and old.

Transforming Coaching with Science & Fun

Kessel believes that volleyball should be taught in a way that’s both scientifically sound and full of joy. His mission in the Philippines was not only to inspire young players but also to equip local coaches with tools to sustain the sport’s growth long after he leaves.

“The beauty of this trip was seeing the AHA moments—not just with the kids, but also with the coaches who will continue this work.”

By integrating game-based learning and real-world training techniques, he hopes to accelerate learning and ensure that more young athletes stay engaged with volleyball for life.

Kessel's Personal Connection to the Philippines

This trip was also deeply personal. Kessel’s family has a long history in Southeast Asia—his grandfather worked with the World Health Organisation, his father was a WWII captain, and his son, Cody, is now a world-class volleyball player.

“Seeing my son continue the family’s connection with this region makes this even more special. Volleyball is a lifetime sport, and we’re here to make sure more kids experience its joy.”

Building Courts, Building Futures

A key takeaway from Kessel’s trip is the importance of accessibility. While basketball hoops and football goals are often permanent fixtures, volleyball nets are usually temporary.

“We need courts that stay up all the time. One net is enough to change a community—just one. If you build it, they will come.”

A Legacy That Lives On

As John Kessel reflects on his journey, his message is clear: volleyball is more than a sport. It’s a tool for empowerment, connection, and lifelong growth. Whether through in-person training or online resources, his mission is to ensure that the next generation of players and coaches keep the ball flying.

“This is a frustrating game at first, but if we teach it right, we can create a new generation of players who love the sport for a lifetime.”

For Kessel, the work is never done. And for LKTBF, the movement is only just beginning.
